If you are planning on retiring soon, you may have considered the idea of moving into an active adult community. Brad Breeding of My Life Site, gives us some pros and cons of choosing to live in this type of community.

Not to be confused with a retirement home or assisted living, an active adult community is made of single-family homes, condos or townhomes that are owned by the resident with at least one member of the household being over a certain age (usually around 55 years old). Typically, these communities feature their own amenities in addition to be close to shopping, restaurants, attractions, etc. Low-maintenance or maintenance-free exteriors and common areas are the norm with interior upkeep being the responsibility of the homeowner. Active adult communities do not have on-site dining or healthcare but do have certain amenities covered under the HOA fees. These amenities might include golf, clubhouses, pools, tennis, etc.

While active adult communities might not be the right fit for everyone, it’s important to consider all your options when planning for retirement. Low- or no-maintenance exteriors could be an important upside to this type of community for some people, as this is something you might not want to worry about as you age if you plan to stay in the home for years to come. Another pro would be that all of your neighbors are your peers, you may find it easier to make friends when everyone around you is at the same stage in their lives. On that same note, you’ll find most active adult communities to be quiet and kid free, with the exception being (hopefully) considerate visitors. Lastly, moving to an active adult community means organized activities, gatherings, events and outings.

On the flip side, not everyone finds it appealing to live in a neighbor that lacks age diversity. Some people may prefer to interact with people of all ages and be in a more appropriate environment for young visitors and long-term guests. As mentioned previously, these communities do not have on-site dining and healthcare so they may not be the best fit for someone expecting to need or want those services in the near future.

The mentioned pros and cons are not a complete list by any means. It is important to analyze your own personal needs and wants for the future before making a decision like this. If being able to ditch the yard work, have a plethora of amenities at your fingertips and live a more active lifestyle with ease is appealing to you, an active adult community might be just the right move for you.
